What Is WordPress?
It is important that we, at least, understand what WordPress is before we move on to how to Build your Website.
WordPress was created by Matt Mullenweg. It was originally created to create simple blogs, but it has been further improved on to perform tasks way beyond that. It could now be used to build even complex websites for any online function. That is why you can be sure to choose whatever you want to build, and the processes are very easy. You can build your website using wordpress.com, which is a cloud hosted service or you can install WordPress on your own server. Either of the two gives you the same result. It’s only a matter of how efficient your own server is. If you think that you can handle it all by yourself on your own server, go on. You can host it from there. A lot of magazines use WordPress because it easy to upload pages and post, and it is easy to manage as you can do that directly on the website through the wordPress dashbord. You can always do your maintenance while your site is still running and accessible to visitors.
You can design your website to look like anything you want. It doesn’t have to look like a straight blog.
WordPress website can be built in two ways – The cloud hosting and self-hosting services.
This allows you to create a website on the WordPress.com service and manage your site from there. To begin, you need to have a WordPress account with which you can create as many websites as you want. However, you are allowed to have multiple WordPress accouts if you want to.
First, go to www.wordpress.com, then click on the signup now button placed on the right side of your screen. It takes you a page where you will have to fill up a form with relevant information. You must be careful to use information that is true and you can always remember in case you may need it in future to solve some problem.
Your user name should be one that relates to your sight; something easily identifiable, maybe the name of your site.
Your password must be one that cannot be easily cracked. You are advised to use a combination of upper and lower case characters (small and capital letters), and symbols to make it more complicated. As you insert the characters, WordPress will show you somewhere below whether or not the password is good. You must make sure it is good before you go ahead to insert it again in the confirm space provided under. Example – darKR**m.
The next step is to enter your email address. It is important that you create an email account basically for your website. WordPress will always send you important updates through the email account you provide. For example – email@example.com
Make sure you read the policy page which you click on to open. Check the box given to show that you agree to the terms. Then select either Gimme a blog or just a username before you click on the next button.
After clicking to the next page, the complete-your-registration page will come up. You will be required to go to your email to activate your account through the email sent to your email box by WordPress. If you don’t do that, your account will be deactivated. A link is sent to you and when you click on it, it will tell you that your application is complete. Then you go back to your WordPress to continue by providing your name and a little information about yourself, after which you save your profile by clicking the button indicating such below. The whole if this is done in just a few minutes.
Now you are ready to set up your website
Go to WordPress.com and enter your username and pass word, and click login. A page comes up that says setup another wordpress.com blog. Go to the address and add signup to wordpress.com/, then enter; then provide the information required.
Blog Domain name
your domain name is the name your website will be called on the search engine. It is used to set up your URL. It is very important that you get it right at once because it cannot be changed after submission.
This is the name that will appear on top of your site.
Choose a language and select a box under privacy. Then click on create blog. Another page appears showing you that ling.com is yours if ling is what you used as your domain name. Click on it; and congratulations, you have your own website already.
A WordPress site has two main parts.
The front end
This is where the public can read what you post on your site. They can leave their comments if you create a comment form after your post. That is easy to create using a simple widget available on the site.
The back end
This is where you post your articles, pictures, videos and control the looks and everything else of your site. It takes you to the dashboard where you have all the tools to manipulate the looks and functionality of your site. You can decide to be the only one who can access this end, and you can also give other people the access to your admin panel. All that can be done within the admin panel at the back end.
